Where to Eat in Prague on Christmas Eve 2022

For Czechs the most important day of the holiday season is… the 24th! Yes, it’s Christmas Eve when the whole family gets together around the Christmas tree and waits for Baby Jesus to bring the gifts. It’s when we spend time together, observe all kinds of curious traditions and in the evening sit down to the festive dinner of fried carp and potato salad. 

That’s why it might be surprisingly challenging to find an open restaurant in Prague on Christmas Eve. But no worries, we got you covered with this restaurant guide for December 2022.

 

Restaurant Ungelt 

Two culinary events await you at the Ungelt restaurant on Christmas Eve: Christmas snails at lunchtime and a Christmas Eve menu in the evening. For dinner, you can enjoy guinea fowl stuffed with duck liver foie gras, creamy fish soup with St. James’ mussels, roasted stonefish in truffle butter with broccoli and pumpkin, plum sorbet, beef tenderloin with potato terrine and royal oyster mushrooms and chestnut parfait with dates and dried figs.

Do you feel like a 6-course tasting menu? At Coda Restaurant you can spice up your festive moments with wild duck galantine, fish soup with roe and croutons, pear sorbet with saffron mousse, roasted beef tenderloin or traditional carp filets with potato salad. Restaurace Malostranská Beseda

The Christmas menu at Malostranská Besedá this year features the classics in the form of fish soup with roe and milk, grilled salmon steak with pumpkin risotto and pancetta, and butter-fried specialties with potato salad: veal steak, carp horseshoes and breast steak from a farm chicken.

Augustine Restaurant

Christmas in the luxurious surroundings of the fine dining restaurant Augustine in Malá Strana will present a 5-course menu that includes duck confit with coconut and chili, lobster tail with roasted Jerusalem artichoke, consommé of smoked eel with carp dumplings, venison loin with beetroot and foie gras and dessert in the form of chestnuts, gingerbread or rum and raisin ice cream. There’s also a vegetarian option of broccoli with cheddar, cabbage with potato-truffle velouté, pumpkin cappuccino with coconut milk, beetroot with buttermilk and tarragon and the same desserts.

Brewery U tří růží

This pub with its own brewery in the centre of Prague has prepared several specialties for the Christmas holidays. Snail ragout with mushrooms and bread, fish soup, wine sausage with mushroom crouppot and apple strudel with caramel cinnamon sauce.

Terasa u zlaté studně

Terrace at the Golden Well will offer a variety of great dishes. You will taste Blini with Ossetra Royal caviar, grilled St. James mussels with fennel salad, foie gras terrine, carp velouté, lobster with grilled octopus puree celery, beef steak with potato puree and truffles. The sweet spot at the end will be banana-tropical cream with ice cream and pralines.

La Bodeguita del Medio

The Christmas menu at the Cuban restaurant La Bodeguita consists of salmon cream, fresh oysters on ice with shallot vinaigrette, snails au gratin with garlic butter and sea salt. The main course is the typical Czech fried carp filet with potato salad or fried veal filet, with potato salad as well.

Hoffmeister Restaurant

Celebrate the Christmas holidays with a festive 6-course menu in the restaurant of the Hoffmeister Hotel. After the veal carpaccio with truffle, you will enjoy crawfish cream with Keta caviar and crème fraîche, St. James mussels with pumpkin puree and garlic mousse and mango sorbet. The main course is a choice between venison loin with plum sauce and potato croquette and sea bass with fregula, sage butter and wine sauce. Why not enjoy a traditional Christmas in the Zvonice restaurant with a 5-course menu in three variations: Old Czech, Czech festive and vegetarian? Mama Shelter’s Christmas Eve menu this year features classic fish soup with roe and beef tartare; main courses include duck leg confit, cabbage and lokše, grilled zander with glazed mushrooms, Christmas mezze of pumpkin hash with pickled cheese, mushroom croquettes and fresh bread, veal schnitzel with potato salad, venison loin on rosemary with Christmas Kuba and traditional sirloin with bun dumplings. Christmas Eve dinner can be enjoyed in the relaxed atmosphere of the Monkey Bar. A 4-course Christmas menu awaits guests at the Deer restaurant near Old Town Square. Deer is a specialist in venison, but the Christmas menu will be more traditional this year: you can expect roasted snails with root vegetables, salad and spinach brioche, traditional fish soup, fried pieces of carp, Viennese veal schnitzel and for dessert a poppy seed mini strudel.

And don’t forget that public transport on Christmas Eve runs according to the night schedule (with longer times in between) already from 6 pm! You can catch the last metro at midnight.
